Pilot Script Breakdowns

Purpose and Goal:

This assignment will prepare you for the upcoming TV Pilot outline you will complete. It also provides tools to use, learn, and master for your future writing and helps you become aware of your best writing process.

Instructions:

PART 1 – BREAKDOWN USING THE GRID

  • Pick a pilot episode script to break down.

    • Read the script and break the episode down from the script only.

    • The script must also have its Act Breaks written in the script, or at least be a show with commercials. Sorry-not-sorry streamers.

  • Use THE GRID to briefly describe every scene’s plot points and character actions. Then, find and break the scenes into their appropriate act breaks.

PART 2 – STORYLINES

  • Write a logline for each storyline you identify in the pilot episode.

PART 3 – CHARACTERS

  • For each identified character with a storyline, write a two to three-sentence paragraph synopsis of who your character is in the pilot episode only.
